Bram Stoker Awards Announce Graphic Novel Nominees

hwa-logo450

The Horror Writers Association’s annual awards nominees have just been announced. It’s always intriguing to see how the past year in comics is reflected, and just how broadly the term “horror” can be applied.  Even the most generous of reader, though, will struggle to rationalise Wolverine’s inclusion. iZombie: Six Feet Under and Rising

Chris Roberson (w) Mike Allred (a)

Vertigo, 144 pages, $16.99

Chris Roberson seems to be living a charmed life in comics at the moment.  From seemingly nowhere, he appeared, working on a Fables spin-off, and a few months later, brought out this creator-owned series with Mike Allred (Madman, X-Statix).  With such a high-profile illustrator behind him, it comes as no surprise that Roberson is a talented writer and that iZombie is quickly becoming a tent-pole of the Vertigo imprint.  In Gwen — the beautiful, amnesiac, undead protagonist — he has crafted a unique, sympathetic and entertaining spin on the zombie archetype. Almost a decade since the release of the first 30 Days of Night series, writer Steve Niles is set to return to the universe he created with its first ongoing series, starting October 2011 published by IDW.  Not only will Niles be returning to write what must surely have been the most iconic vampires since the year 2000 for true horror fans, he’s bringing artist Sam Kieth along with him.  Best known for his Image and MTV series The Maxx, Sam Kieth as a blisteringly unique artist whose style could not be more suited to the intense gore and terror at the heart of 30 Days of Night. Locke & Key Volume 1: Welcome to Lovecraft

Locke & Key Volume 1

Locke & Key Volume 1: Welcome to Lovecraft

Written by Joe Hill, illustrated by Gabriel Rodriguez and published by IDW.

Written by one of the most inspired minds in horror today, this first volume of Locke & Key represents a dazzling first step into an intricate fictional world that captures the same magic that you felt reading stories as a child.  The Locke family retreat to a house filled with magic doors after a brutal tragedy threatens to tear them apart, and this focus on the Locke children as they tentatively rebuild their world is a bold move that distracts from the gravity of their situation in the best possible way.  There’s an assuredness about the plotting that hints at greater depths to come, a mythology so understood by the creators that they don’t need to reveal too many of the secrets yet because I’m already hooked.  Rodriguez’ art is highly stylised but suits the tone of the comic beautifully, establishing a look that is all his own with enough intricacy and detail that the town of Lovecraft feels like a place that lives and breathes whether or not our eyes are on it. Articulate Blasphemy: An interview with Cy Dethan

Articulate Blasphemy: An interview with Cy Dethan.

By P M Buchan

I recently got the opportunity to speak to one of my favourite British comic writers Cy Dethan, whose work to me has come to demonstrate just how much can be achieved by working outside the mainstream in comics.  Traditionally all of the best writers and artists in the UK have been poached by American publishers and set to work at subdivisions of Marvel and DC, but after reading Cy’s most recent graphic novel Slaughterman’s Creed I can confidently say that comics in the UK have found a new voice, one that’s articulate, blasphemous and ugly.  Everything that we like here at SCREAM mag. Welcome to Hoxford

Welcome to Hoxford

Welcome to Hoxford

Created by Ben Templesmith, published by IDW

Brutal, visceral and beautiful, this is the werewolf story that you’ve always wished somebody would tell.  Set in a private correctional institution populated by cannibals and paedophiles, the guards in Hoxford have their own way of dealing with deviancy and it’s bloody good fun to read.  Read more…
